I still vividly remember March 2008 when I met Mats eyes as he turned around to see me approaching him for our first date in Granville Island in Vancouver, BC. I have never lost that sensation I felt in my heart from that day. Twelve years later as we approach the four year anniversary of his passing (September 25, 1982 - May 24th, 2016) I contemplate all the ways Mat touched my heart and soul and how we was and will always be my most profound mentor in becoming the best version of myself. The following list which I wrote years back comes to mind.
Mats (MLK) Master plan - Mat - the one you want by your side, always.
Unconditional love - It's all about love - love is all that matters.
Family is the most important.
Never go to bed angry or sleep on the couch.
Syrah is my favourite wine AND dog
Always be kind. It's how I want to be remembered - Kill them with kindness.
You learn what you want to do and like, but you also learn what you don't want to do and don't like.
Always get back to joy.
Financial planning is essential. Find ways to have passive income.
Lists keep you organized.
Goals and plans are critical components to have in your toolbox.
Discipline. Discipline. Discipline.
Do the work. The payoff will be grand.
Hygiene is essential. Toothpaste, floss, and and hand sanitizer is necessary
Daily rituals set up your day for success.
Quality (food, wine, coffee, relationships, friendships) over quantity.
Probiotics are your friend.
Define balance for yourself.
Do the things that make you feel good - like getting your hair cut.
Natural beauty always wins.
Always fight and advocate for what you want and believe.
Build a healthy support system.
No education is a waste of time.
Today as I live out my 34th year, a birth year Mat never had the opportunity to live, I really strive each and everyday to live fully, well, and to my greatest inner contentment. I live and practice joy daily. I practice The Four Agreements (1. Do Not Take Things Personally, 2. Never Make Assumptions, 3. Be Impeccable With Your Words, and 4. All Do Your Best) daily. I ask myself Is It Kind? Is It True? It Is Necessary always before making decisions. I seek out ways to be of service, connected to community, and finding meaning in the day always. And I know my connection to Mat and the greater world only continues to grow stronger and more clear. Thank you Mat. You have and will always be my greatest cheerleader, and I will always be yours. My life is, and will always be better with you by my side and in my heart. ❤️
